What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is a unique internet address that identifies a website. For example, “mysite.com.br” is a domain name. It serves as both the address and the identity of your website, allowing users to easily find it online.
In Brazil, standard domain names can be between 2 and 63 characters long (excluding the extension) and may consist of letters (“a” to “z”), numbers (0 to 9), and hyphens. However, a domain name cannot consist solely of numbers, nor can it start or end with a hyphen. The most common extension in Brazil is .com.br, representing approximately 93% of all registered domains.
The Brazilian registry offers specific categories tailored to different needs. There are domains available for both individuals and legal entities (such as .com.br, .net.br, .dev.br, .app.br, or .ia.br), extensions dedicated to licensed professionals (.adv.br, .eng.br), and options exclusive to legal entities (.ind.br, .tur.br). The choice of the domain name is the sole responsibility of the applicant, requiring only two simple steps: an availability search and the registration process.
